Curbside Program

The City of Lewisville contracts for residential recycling services with Waste Management of Texas, Inc. Collection is provided every other week, and the City provides a 64-gallon wheeled recycling cart with a lid to every residence to make it easy to participate in the program. Each cart has a unique serial number and is “assigned” to a specific residence address. The carts should be placed at the same location that trash is placed for collection by 7 a.m. on the scheduled collection day. If you need assistance in determining what your collection day for recycling is, please contact the City at 972-219-3503.

Acceptable items for the curbside recycling program include: aluminum, steel, and tin cans; glass bottles and jars; plastic containers 1 through 7; and mixed residential papers such as newspaper, magazines, junk mail, phone books, cereal boxes, and flattened cardboard. All items must fit inside the cart with the lid closed. No separation is necessary – just place all items loose in the cart. Do not use plastic bags in the cart. Do not place materials such as Styrofoam, pizza boxes, liquids, or containers that held hazardous wastes in the cart because the materials will not be collected. All containers should be lightly rinsed to remove food residue. If you have questions about whether something is recyclable or not, please call the City at 972-219-3503 for information.

If your recycling is not collected on your scheduled day, please check to make sure you did not mistakenly put unacceptable materials in the cart. If not, immediately contact Waste Management at 972-315-5400 to report the missed collection so they can promptly respond to your request. Continued problems with missed collections should be reported to the City at 972-219-3503.

City Ordinance No. 3152-12-2004 prohibits the scavenging and unauthorized collection of recyclable materials placed out for collection. Violators face a fine of not more than $500 for each offense. If you witness a violation occurring, please call 9-1-1 to report the problem.

Commercial establishments are required to use Waste Management for solid waste collection services, but businesses may contract with any recycling company for recycling services. If you need assistance locating a recycler for your business products, please contact the City’s Environmental Programs Office at 972-219-3503.

Hazardous Disposal Program

The City of Lewisville operates a household hazardous waste (HHW) collection program that provides residents with a safe and environmentally sound way to get rid of waste materials that cannot be put into the landfill. On the second Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. until noon, Lewisville residents can bring their hazardous household products and electronics to the Residential Convenience Center located at 330 West Jones Street. A full list of materials that are accepted is available on the City's web site at www.cityoflewisville.com. A driver's license for proof of residency is required.

Hazardous waste is one of our nation's biggest environmental problems. Annually, over six billion tons of this waste is generated from households alone. Most of us think of hazardous waste as something that is produced as a result of industrial activity, but the truth is that a typical home can contain 100 to 200 products for cleaning, painting, lubricating, disinfecting, etc. that technically become hazardous wastes when we discard them. Products from a single home might seem insignificant, but when thousands of homes use similar products and dispose of them down the drain or in the landfill, the combined effect becomes a major problem.

Household hazardous wastes should never be improperly disposed of by pouring wastes down the drain, on the ground, into the storm sewer, or into the trash. These substances can contaminate surface waters, septic tanks, or the wastewater treatment system. Some substances have the potential to cause physical injury to workers in the treatment system or to sanitation workers who pick up the trash. As consumers, we are all in a position to help control the amount of hazardous waste that enters the environment. Each of us is environmentally responsible for the purchase, use, and disposal of the products we have in our possession. By shopping wisely, reading labels, and properly managing the hazardous wastes we generate, we can responsibly and successfully address the hazardous waste problem.
